2010 ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES


The Annual Meeting of the North Sandwich Community Association was held September 11, 2010, at Clark Hall. Thirty-five (35) members attended with twenty-eight (28) properties represented. Coffee and muffins were served from 8:30 to approximately 9:10 AM.

Presiding: Jim Langenbach, President.

The President called the meeting to order at 9:15 AM.

The President then called for the Secretary’s report.

Secretary’s Report:

The Secretary, Terry Patterson, asked the attendees if everyone had a copy of the 2009 minutes. There were no responses. Then the attendees were asked if there were any errors or omissions that should be addressed. There were no responses. A motion to accept the report as written came from the floor and it was seconded from the floor. A vote by the attendees accepted the report as written.

Treasurer’s Report:

The Treasurer, Alan DeCew, reported the balance in the NSCA Accounts was $56,781.21. His analysis suggests the growth of the accounts is on track to meet all current and future requirements. Although the interest earned on our savings is low, inflation also is very low which should moderate the cost escalation of future obligations such as road resurfacing. He sees no need to change our current annual assessment of $60 per property.

One new property has been added to our Association increasing the total to 117. Welcome to the Camiolo family who just finished building at 263 Phillips Rd. #263 has been vacant for several years since the residence was destroyed by fire. At the time of the fire it was owned by the Lott family.

The Treasurer’s Report was accepted by all present.

Entertainment Committee:

Judi Rubin (#231) thanked those who participated in the raffle. Proceeds of the raffle pay for the Sunshine Fund, the Summer Picnic and the Fall Fling dinner. The drawings were held as part of the Summer Picnic at the home of Dick and Mae Miller (#298) on 31 July 2010. Approximately 60 people attended. Good weather, good food, good company and great fun. Raffle winners were:

Joe Diaz (#345) and Lisa Roberts (#323) won $25 gift certificates.

Kathy Connors (#259) won the TV.

George and Linda Smith (#314/316) won the free weekend in the Julian Cottage.

The annual street fair was canceled this year to allow time to develop plans to revitalize the event. Participation and attendance has been declining for several years, For the future, Lou Julian suggests that the Street Fair tables be consolidated in one area, so that all visitors would see the whole offering and all vendors would get equal exposure.

Judi (and Arthur) were given a hearty round of applause for the many things she (they) do in support of the NSCA.

General Announcements:

In late July, Sagamore Beach was the location of a late night crime spree, twenty-eight (28) cars were broken into and various item were stolen including cash. Other property was also stolen. Police were called and while being pursued by the police the perpetrator escaped in a stolen kayak. The next day he was observed riding a stolen bike by the owner of the bike. That individual was able to provide Bourne police with enough information to make an arrest and recover some of the stolen property . If anyone needs additional information or hopes to recover stolen property they should contact the Evidence Officer of the Bourne Police Department.

The Bourne Police Chief says that MOTION DETECTING OUTSIDE LIGHTING is a good deterrent for the type of crime we experienced.

Linda Sheldon (#321) reported that at about the same time as our crime spree, the Bourne Police busted a pair of brother's on the other side of the canal who were breaking into homes during the day.

President’s Report:

Road Report

The problem storm drain in front of #250 has been fixed by Key Enterprises.

A DEAD END sign has been installed at the entrance to discourage people from driving down Phillips Road looking for the state park.

Sand build up on the roadway continues to be a problem. Our attempt to hire a contractor to perform regular sand removal has not been successful. In the interim, residents are encouraged to remove any buildup that occurs near their property. In the past, Al Sherman, apparently rented a street sweeper periodically to remove the sand at a cost of approximately $600. Jim Langenbach will explore the possibility of doing something of a similar nature.

New News:

The new signs restricting parking on the Bourne section of Phillips Road have dramatically improved access to our section of the road.

The association web site is http://northsagamore.blogspot.com/ . Members are encouraged to obtain Association information at the site. Information available includes reports like this annual report, social activities like the Fall Fling and Summer Picnic, and membership data. If anyone desires to delete specific data, such as a telephone number, from the site, please contact Jim Langenbach, He is the webmaster.

Phyllis Foote (#308) the editor of THE SANDPIPER reported that submissions are off dramatically and are insufficient to support any regular publishing schedule. After a discussion, it was decided to to try to publish any news items on the NSCA internet site. Submissions should be sent to Jim Langenbach at jlangenbach@live.com. The attendees expresses their appreciation of Phyllis' past care and feeding of The Sandpiper.

Elections of Officers

Nominations or volunteers were solicited from the floor. None were forthcoming. After a discussion, the current officers agreed to serve another year.

Jim Langenbach (#327) as president.

Lou Julian (#268) as Vice President.

Alan DeCew (#339) as treasurer

Terry Patterson (#318/320) as secretary


Neighborhood Representatives
Peg O'Hara (#233) has replaced Paul Dawson (#248) as the Area #2 representative.

Other News:
Dorothy Blickens (#284) gave a emotional thanks to the Association, friends and neighbors for the support her father and family received during the recent illness and death of Lisa Blickens, her mother.



Linda Sheldon brought up two subjects that she thought would be of general interest to residents of the area:
The first is that the group “Friends of Scusset Beach” has installed a ramp connecting the State Park parking lot with the walk/bike/roller blade path alongside the canal. This addition should significantly improve access to that area for people with mobility limitations.
The second is that an interesting photo exhibit of the early bridges crossing the canal is on display in the breezeway between the restrooms of the rest/parking area alongside the canal below the Sagamore Bridge (down below Friendlies), Included is a photo of an accident in which a ship collided with the draw bridge.
